the big duck

A curious part of Long Island history is the Big Duck, located in Flanders, NY. It's about 90 minutes east of my home, so I hadn't been able to visit it. However, before my trip to Japan, I felt compelled to buy my host family a small local-themed gift to thank them for their hospitality. Knowing the Japanese love for Americana, I made the big trip across the island and picked up a gift that my host family will hopefully like. The Big Duck was originally created in 1931 to sell ducks and duck eggs from a family farm, but has since been moved twice and is now owned by a small non-profit organization which runs the gift shop and day-to-day operations.

These are a couple of pictures that I took at the Big Duck on June 27, 2002. That silver Volkswagen parked in front is mine.

A view of the Duck from the front, with my car in the foreground. Inside, there is a small air-conditioned gift shop. A side/rear view of the Duck, with Route 24 in the background.
