Florida 2002

In December of 2002, I went on vacation to Florida with my family. Our first stop, from December 22-25, was the parks of Walt Disney World in Orlando. Aftewrards, we headed south on Interstate 4 to Sundial Resort on Sanibel Island for some more relaxed vacationing.

The last time I had been to Disney World was in February 1999. Since then, a wealth of new hotels and attractions have popped up. It was a great experience to see them all, and a big surprise to learn just how many people visit Disney World for Christmas.

David drives a rented boat around the Port Orleans resort, where we stayed. Another New Orleans-themed resort is located right down the man-made river from Port Orleans. My family, except David, at EPCOT. David sleeps on a rock in the Quebec-themed area of EPCOT's World Showcase. David and Adam proudly hold up their "single rider" entry cards to Test Track, one of the few thrill rides at EPCOT. Adam is less excited than my parents at the prospect of getting up extra-early to wait at a bus stop. The "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire: Play It!" attraction at MGM, where contestants can play for prizes that range from pin sets to a cruise. My family, excluding me, at MGM's New York set. Note the presence of cheesy Christmas-themed decorations. My family, excluding me, near the center of the Magic Kingdom. This looks like an ordinary trash can in the Magic Kingdom's Tomorrowland, but it rolls around and speaks. Some staff member was having a great time messing with people's heads using this trash can. Right near Space Mountain is a gift shop and arcade that includes a Dancing Stage Disney's Rave Machine, part of Konami's Dance Dance Revolution series. David and I drew a small crowd stepping to the beats of Disney songs. One clerk at the shop was so impressed with my DDR skills, she awarded me a certificate right there on the spot. After I received it, some other guy started playing much harder (and therefore more impressive) songs. Tigger with me and my dad at Christmas dinner in the Magic Kingdom. My parents with Tigger at the Magic Kingdom. Adam and me with Eeyore at the Magic Kingdom. My brothers and me with Pooh at the Magic Kingdom. My parents with Pooh at the Magic Kingdom. One of the many shells and other marine specimens found at Sundial Resort's Gulf coast beach. Sanibel Island is well-known for its shells. Here's a small sampling of what washed to shore at Bowman's Beach. Adam, my dad, and David play in the surf at Bowman's Beach. Adam and David try in vain to get coconuts from a tree at Bowman's Beach. Fishermen at the Ding Darling wildlife refuge. David and dad try out our rented binoculars and bikes at the Ding Darling wildlife refuge. A funny but ultimately ignored sign in the parking lot of the Ding Darling wildlife refuge. We never saw any gopher tortoises on the road.
