carnegie mellon pre-college 1998

These pictures were taken at Carnegie Mellon's Pre-College program in the summer of 1998.

It's a picture of all the friends I met up with in and around my computer science class at Carnegie Mellon University's summer program. Back row: Russell. Front row, from left: Joe, Tom, me, and Amanda. Taken with the aid of a self-timer (and proving that a self-timer is worthless without a tripod), here's a picture of my roommate Dan (right) and next-door neighbor Justin (left) with me (center). At the CMU summer program, all three of us along with Justin's roommate Tony (not pictured) shared a "suite." Mark and Amanda are in the front row, I'm in the middle, and Tom and Dave are in the back. We're all (supposed to be) hard at work during computer science class recitation. Joe would have been in the above picture, but he wasn't feeling very photogenic that day and ducked down under his desk. I managed to catch him tooling around with his pet robot. Apparently, based on his facial expression, I didn't snap the picture quickly enough. Amanda stands poised, ready to incinerate the "Bufano ball" (a ping-pong ball painted to look like our computer science teacher Sean Bufano). Earlier in the semester, Amanda, Joe and I had collaborated on a spoof of the course home page. (The "Bufano ball," by the way, was incinerated safely outside later that night, but it was too dark to get a picture.) This was supposed to become my personal "pic," except (1) I don't really have a facial expression, and (2) the plant in the background appears to be part of my hair (in my opinion). It's a funny little error, but I didn't think it suitable to represent myself to everybody around the world. Tom's roommate never showed up, so Tom had a second computer sent up. With two computers, and two high-speed network connections, his room (Donner Hall room 108) became known as the "Donner 108 Computer Cluster." This picture was taken at a lull in the activity -- nobody was hanging out in the cluster at that time. Luckily, that provided a stunning view of the soda-can pyramid (well, it's actually more of a trapezoid) and pizza-box pile. By the way, the fan atop the desk is actually cooling the computer on the left, which doesn't have a cover. My brother David, age 9 at the time he drew this, has never been a fan of my driving skills, in part because it took three attempts to pass my New York state driver's test. So, along with my first care-package from home at CMU came this drawing. Three friends and I found a photo booth, and for only $1, got four pictures of us trying to cram ourselves into a space designed maybe for two people. I think, by the end, we got it down pat. :)
