the prom

The most memorable night for any Syosset High School senior, the senior prom, was on Friday, June 18, 1999. In addition to having a lot of fun with friends, dancing, and partying before and afterwards, I took a whole bunch of pictures. Here are some of the highlights.

And here's the happy couple themselves. That's me and my date, Amanda Sammut (with whom I went "just as friends," for the record). This picture was taken during the brief sliver of daylight associated with the prom experience -- shortly before we left. Here's Amanda by her lonesome (well, not really -- I'm behind the camera in this one) with one of many of the beautiful pinkish roses that were on every table. The folks at the Waldorf-Astoria didn't seem to mind all those flowers; chances are they didn't pay for them anyway. Recently, I had the honor of becoming good friends with Syosset High School assistant principal Mr. Barry. He's retiring after this year, and I for one wish him well. If only I had gotten to know him earlier, perhaps I wouldn't have turned out so bitter against the administration to begin with. Perhaps. Here's me with fellow WKWZ staffer, and fellow New York Yankees fan Evan Carmen, who actually found the will to come to the prom. I was surprised and impressed at his sheer presence there. He'll be attending American University in the fall. Here's me, on the right this time, with senior Elaine Carrera and zany social studies teacher Mr. Wallis, who is also retiring. Mr. Wallis has been a fixture at Syosset High School senior proms for years. Here's just three of the 16 people in my limo, which supposedly seated up to 18 (that calculation was obviously based on very small people). During a brief stop on the way, I'm sitting beside Kingsley Chao and Robert Wong. Suspenders are one of the most fun fashion accessories I'll ever wear, except when I have to go to the bathroom and I'm also wearing a cummerbund. Uncoordination aside, here's a nice candid photo of Rob Cox and me goofing off amidst the fun backdrop of the prom. I'm really going to miss Mr. Gessner, easily one of the funniest, most interesting teachers I've ever had. Here he is in all his jolly glory. I managed to startle my friend Adrian Javaherian by shouting out his name then flashing a picture. To help atone for this emotional trauma, we took a more normal picture as well. "Normal" is, of course, a relative term. Here's me with Evelina Khukhashvili, the girl I termed "the coolest person to come out of Georgia [the former Soviet Socialist Republic, not the state] since Stalin." She'll be attending NYU in the fall. Why did I post up two separate pictures of senior (and fellow future Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science student) Betty Kim? I don't know entirely -- she just seemed awfully photogenic (or crazy) that night. I'm going to miss Stephen Lee, one of the more psycho kids from my classes. Here we are sharing a heartfelt moment. (Don't get any misleading ideas now.) You'd think that after some 390KB of Instant Message conversations, Rebecca Meyers and I would have nothing left to say to each other. Fortunately, we managed to meet up at the prom nonetheless. My 10th- and 11th-grade Spanish teacher, Ms. Minutillo, couldn't possibly let me pass by without a photo op. Here we are. Here I am with good buddy Scott Pollack, decked out in festive Christmas colors (red hair, greenish outfit). He'll be attending NYU in the fall. Imagine how surprised I was to find Syosset alumnus J.T. Turret at the prom. He's transferring up to SUNY-Old Westbury, right near Syosset, and might return to do night supervision for the radio station whose presence he only so recently graced. During one of the rare restful moments at the prom, here I am relaxing with Kingsley Chao and Joey Tsai, who'll be going to UC-Berkeley this fall. Last but certainly not least, this is me with Robert Wong, who had the highest GPA of anyone at the prom. Yeah, Wong!
